4 High-Tech Holiday Gifts for Seniors

The last two years showed us that technology has a place in a senior’s life to keep them connected to friends and family. There’s no shortage of high-tech gifts, and the pandemic not only helped an older generation adapt to tech toys, they were also able to learn how to use them as well.

An AARP study found that 82% of seniors rely on technology to stay connected with loved ones while 55% use a smartphone to make purchases.

If you have a senior who embraced technology, Williamsbridge Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at four holiday gifts that are perfect for the tech-lover in your life.

  1. LED Flashlight Glove

While this isn’t a piece of connected tech, this is a handy gift at a great price point of under $20. Instead of having to hold a flashlight and manage tools at the same time, keep your hands free with these gloves that come equipped with two waterproof LED flashlights on each hand. Light up the situation and keep both of your hands free!

  1. Voice-Activated Speaker

If you have a parent or other elderly loved one who lives alone, you know that you want the peace of mind to be sure that they are safe. A voice-activated speaker like the Echo Dot can not only call for help if someone needs it (by saying, for example, “Alexa, call 911”), it can also be configured to set alarms for to take routine medication, checking the weather, or any other reminder that’s needed.

  1. Jar and Bottle Openers

Not having the hand strength to be able to open a jar or bottle can be frustrating. With this combo package, you’ll be able to pop these items open with ease. This bundle comes with a 5-in-1 tool that can open any type of can, bottle, or jar.

  1. Wireless Tracking Device

A wireless tracking device can be stuck to any object in case it’s lost—car keys, the remote to the TV, reading glasses, or anything else that can seem to grow legs and disappear. Just use an app connected to your smartphone to have it located, or you can even sync it with a voice-activated speaker to have it find the missing item for you. (Come to think of it, we all may be able to use this tech-friendly gadget!)

6 Risk Factors for Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is not as common as others that affect women, such as breast cancer, but it can be far more deadly.

Common signs are bloating, abdominal or pelvic pain, feeling full or having trouble eating, and a swollen stomach to where clothes are tight but you’re still losing weight. Early detection, as it is in most cancers, is key. The survival rate if caught early is around 94%.

Doctors say if any of these symptoms are persistent, you should be screened, and that’s especially true if you have additional factors that put you at higher risk.

Williamsbridge Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at six risk factors for ovarian cancer.

  1. Age

Younger women can be diagnosed, but ovarian cancer is more common in women 55 or older.

  1. Pregnancy History

Women who have either never been pregnant (or never had a full-term pregnancy) or didn’t give birth until after the age of 35 are at a higher risk.

  1. Being Overweight and Smoking

Being at an unhealthy weight (body mass index [BMI] over 30) can not necessarily increase your chances of getting ovarian cancer, but it can decrease the survival rate. Smoking raises the risk for a certain type of ovarian cancer as well.

  1. Personal and Family Medical History

You’re at a higher risk if you have a close family member who had ovarian cancer or if you have a history that includes breast, uterine, or colorectal cancer.

  1. Fertility Treatment

Studies have shown that having done in vitro fertilization (IVF) can increase the risk of tumors in the ovaries. These are typically borderline or low malignant potential tumors and not invasive types of the disease.

  1. Race and Ethnicity

Research has found that white women with Eastern European or Ashkenazi Jewish (those who established communities in France and Germany during the Middle Ages) backgrounds have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.

4 Ways That Rheumatoid Arthritis Sufferers Can Get Some Relief

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), when the immune system mistakenly attacks your joints, is one of the most chronic conditions among older Americans, as up to 1% of the population can be dealing with RA, and it’s twice as common in women as compared to men.

Williamsbridge Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing would like to share four pain-relief strategies to help deal with the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

  1. Medication

There’s no shortage of medications designed to alleviate the pain of RA. Over-the-counter NSAIDs like Aleve and ibuprofen can be used. Prescription corticosteroids like Medrol and prednisone can also be given, along with other immunotherapy drugs. Due to the variety of medications available, it’s important to provide accurate feedback to your doctor on how each one affects your symptoms.

  1. Heat and Cold Therapy

Warm and cold sensations treat RA symptoms differently, so it’s suggested that you alternate between the two. A heating pad or a warm bath can soothe stiff joints, while ice packs can numb nerve endings to help dull the pain.

  1. Physical and Occupational Therapy

Licensed physical therapists can lead you through specific exercises targeted to relieve RA symptoms. Occupational therapists will show you how to do everyday activities like cooking and bathing without causing additional pain.

  1. Diet and Exercise

Extra pounds can add stress to your joints, so achieving a healthy weight will be beneficial. Fish oil supplements can also help reduce inflammation, as can quitting the use of tobacco products. Moderate and regular exercise – brisk walking, biking, swimming, etc. – can also help improve joint function and range of motion. Discuss any diet and exercise changes with your doctor to help determine a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electric Vehicles

With gas prices soaring to over $5 per gallon nationwide, the sales of new cars dropped nearly 20% from the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year. Battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs), however, went from 118,235 sales in the second quarter of 2021 to 196,788 for the same period in 2022—a 66% jump year-over-year.

With EVs becoming more accessible and more sensible to offset higher gas prices, more people than ever before are looking into the fuel-less alternative.

Williamsbridge Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at some FAQs—frequently asked questions—when it comes to electric vehicles if you’re starting to consider one for your next ride.

  1. Isn’t the Cost of an Electric Vehicle Still High?

Yes, there may be some sticker shock if you’re looking for an electric vehicle, but there’s more to it than that. Some states offer incentives, and there can be a federal tax break of up to $7,500 depending on what make and model you’re looking at. Not to mention what you’ll save on not having to buy gas.

  1. Will I Have to Pay to Charge My Car?

It’s estimated that it will cost you around half of what it costs you in gas to keep your car powered at home. If you’re powering on the road, there are some free charging stations out there—there are phone apps designed to find them for you.

  1. What’s the Range?

Most new EVs can get around 250-300 miles per charge, so the only issue is if you’re taking a long road trip.

  1. How Long Does it Take to Charge?

On a standard electric socket, you’ll get around 5 miles of range per hour. With a higher-capacity outlet installed, you can get a full 250-mile charge overnight. A high-speed charger in public will take about a half hour to “fill” you up.

  1. Does Weather Impact an EV’s Range?

Electric cars don’t generate heat from an engine, so they do have about a 20% reduction in range in freezing temperatures. There’s also slightly less efficiency in the summer, but it’s not as pronounced.
